COMEY LOTEY-Part 2

We continue discussing beauty or rather the concept (or misconception) of beauty.

Today we touch on the obsession to be slim like the supermodels that we see splashed on magazine covers and billboards.

The idea of "slim is beautiful" is a relatively new thing. I think it probably started with Twiggy, the model that looks like, well, a twig. If you look at Renaissance paintings like Botticelli's Birth of Venus you will notice that no undernourished models were used. The Polynesians think plump women are sexy and Chinese mother-in-laws would accuse you of not feeding their daughters enough if your wife looks like a very thin version of Anita Mui (when she was alive). They also want daughters-in-law to have enough flesh to able to give birth many times.

When the survival of the species was important, men chose healthy full-bodied women as their mates and the Twiggy of the time didn't stand a chance. Procreation was a serious business and recreation was not.

Now, I am not saying that obesity is ok. Anything that is unhealthy should be avoided. That includes starving yourself in order to look like Elle McPherson or Naomi Campbell to the point of cultivating bulimia or other habits that are pure bull.

I am sure most of you are not obese or overweight. I am sure the puasa will shed some weight. There is a table for your ideal weight that your doctor or spouse would approve. A healthy you is more desirable than a walking papan. Think of the money you can save on patches, pills, slimming belts and other contraptions that promised a slimmer you. Beauty business is a billion dollar business annually. I am sure we can make better use that money elsewhere.

If you envy the cover girls and the supermodels and think they are your competitor, let me tell you this. They are not ordinary people like you. They are handpicked. Before each photo session, they are worked over by professionals. You and Mok Long Selamoh, Mek Beso and the rest of us wouldn't have that opportunity. To stay in business, these models and film stars work out long hours every day. They have personal trainers. Most don't have to take care of the house, a husband or whining babies.

If you are satisfied with how you look, which you should, I suggest that you take a holiday in one of the beaches in Terengganu. Take a walk with your husband. Enjoy the breeze. If you are too thin (read slim), your husband would spend most of his time running after you every time the Terengganu wind blow you inland. Think about that.

  • Sarah Jessica Parker, a.k.a Carrie Bradshaw of "Sex and the City" fame once said (when asked about her ability to look stick thin after ther birth of her son), " Of course I look like this! First of all, I am PAID to look like this. It's a requirement of the job! And secondly, I can afford to spend hours at the gym and not worry about cleaning my house and things like that AND I can afford a personal trainer. So no... it's not natural and the only reason it happens is because I have the luxury of getting all the help I need."

And ooh, let's not forget Photoshop too! *grin*

  • Few yrs back, my sis had really bad accident along Karak highway. Hit by oil tanker, the car was a total write off. Luckily she survived with some bruises and two broken ribs. Doctor said it could be fatal if she is not full bodied. The extra flesh has served as sponges, shielding the impact.

  • With the celebrities promoting slimming programmes nowadays, more and more people are falling into the trap. The thing is, the advert will say something like this : 399 for 10 sessions!! But once you go, they gave you an analysis and you'll end up paying another 3k on top of that for the whole programme. And the clothesline in Malaysia doesn't help much, they prefer to cater for the extra slim people.

Hehehe, shall try that beach test. Rasa takdoklah Buster nok kena kejor wife dia. But seeing how famous your blog is now, the next thing we'll read in the papers would be - Ladies spotted flying off Pantai Batu Burok, husbands running after wives in vain.

  • This is an inspiring article. Who wants to be slim in three months time after giving birth like Ziana Zain and not have to breastfeed their babies? No way!

Now even a tummy like the Birth of Venus is good for me

  • Well said Pok Ku. To be honest I don't really like or enjoy seeing "papan's" walking by, they look like they might break into pieces if you touched them. I guess some of the blame for this obsession can be put on the shoulders of the media but it does takes 2 to tango ;)

    Cheers!!! :D

  • isk isk papan, sekepeng, airport, lidi.. name it. I was once called all that :( And thats not all; Apek, Aepong (from 'tepung')..sigh* how cruel can one be.

So i took appetton! I even had cans of milk for body builder. But no changed. I played hockey and involved in Commando just to get that nice sawo matang skin.

Now ppl around me would ask, how do you maintain your figure after giving birth, twice. Huh??

For those of you who knows how to increase bodyweight, pls let me know. I wanna be plump!

  • Kri: Heheh!
    Daisyboo: My thoughts exactly.
    Honeytar: Alhamdullillah!
Mek Yang: Maybe we should export subang boong to epal beso. Could be way, way cool.
Lion3ss: I exaggerated a bit. Literary licence. But stranger things had happened on Terengganu beaches.
Lollies: Venus is the Greek Goddess of Love. Anything that looks like any part of her helps.
Hyelbaine: You need some weight for gravity to work when doing the tango.
Najwa: Exactly and the media is changing our perceptions.
Anonymous: You are like me. It is in the genes. As long as you are healthy and feel good about yourself, you are ok. Check the table to see if you are underweight.

  • Why even after all the make up and primming, the models are again touched up this time digitally after the shoot to remove excessive skin, wrinkles, blemishes etc. I think in China people often chose plump woman because it denotes health in a population where famine and disease is common and weigh denotes enough wealth to feed even unwanted daughters :)
