SOFT SELL, HARD SELL

Tuesday, October 26, 2004

It takes a lot of money to make a TV commercial (TVC to the insider like Mdmafia). It takes time too. Mimi, my youngest daughter was one of the "talents" for Maxis (Mengapa bapa pergi jauh-jauh?), KFC (Add on size up), one Barbie doll promotion, Siemens corporate TVC, Ajinomoto's Seri Aji and a few others. While on these shoots, I had to spend long hours waiting for Mimi to finish. Anyway it was fun to see Mimi bugging other people for a change. Sometimes she thinks she is Meryl Streep although Ms Streep is not known for TVC. Mimi retired when she was 10. Now I heard that my son is in an ad agency plugging RTM.

Ads can be very educational. I used to pronounce Hyundai, BM-style (rhymes with pandai) until I heard their jingle "Sunday, Monday...........Hyundai". I learned. TV Ads also helps you be potty-regular. You go to the loo when they are on except when you are watching movies on HBO, Cinemax or Star Movies.

TVC like other ads play on your emotions. Even the bad ones. Anyone remember the Mopiko commercial? It had people jumping and scratching all over the screen. It might be an awful hard sell TVC but I can remember it, as porous as my memory is. Of course there are good soft sell TVC like the Petronas Merdeka and other festive occasions series which never failed to tug at your heart string. Other TVC that got stuck on you are the "Orkid lah", "Kenapa? Tak percaya ke?" and "Now you see it, now you don't". What else? What other commercials are memorable to you?

For a more professional point of view, read Zul's post and mdmafia's FootBall Madness if you haven't done so already

  • Proffesional's aren't qualified to comment on ads. Heh. We lose objectivity. Honestly, the people who comment best on ads are the people it's made for. The viewing public. FYI most ad proffesionals don't watch much TV. We get our weekly CD's from mediabanc, one CD each for radio, print and TV releases. AC Nielsen provides adspend so we know who is doing what. That's it. The boring life of an ad pro. I am actually slightly detached now as am on contract with Accenture for a regional study on busOPS and marOPS. And doing my thesis. Actually the blog is part of it, yours too Uncle. Salams.

  • The most memorable one I watched was the Ubat Batuk Cap Ibu dan Anak, recently saw it again and never ages. Remember when young was enthralled by the elaborate Wayang Kulit, hypnotic song and clear message it brought about. Other notables were of course the hearty MAS commercial for Merdeka of the three kids that went through WWII and later reunited. Other hillarious but also unforgettable were the TROJAN hehe the funny man singing all the way. Anyway proves that simple yet evocative ads that contains normal day elements make the best rather than artful pieces that obscure the product itself.

  • i think one of the most localised ads are on Indonesian TV. you have javanese warriors flying and *dush* *dush* here and there and then, "Sapukan Jamu Cap XYZ" ;)

  • Pok Ku,
Remember that ASN ads back then..'merah sangat lah Mak Ngah..?.err..that is the only ad that I can remember other than 'Sumi Jelly manis..Sumi jelly manis..rasa segar..agar-agar buah..'

That time TVC was just jingles and pictures...that's all.

  • Petronas ad are usually memorable, but I hate the whitening product ads. One of them sort of implied that to get married, the bride must have fair skin. And another one is hotlink ad that shows a guy snapping a photo of a girl he fancies. as if you can go around taking the photos of anybody you like. silap2 lebam mata.

  • You forgot to get your facts right daddy!
    No 1: I have not retired ... I took a break.
    No 2: I nvr bugged anyone ...

    Now for my questions

No 1: What does Abang Boy have to do with anything?
No 2: Why is talent written that way?
    No 3: Where's my photo?

TVC's are really really hard to make! It takes the whole day from 6am till 6pm!! Now if you'll excuse me I have to call up my agent lolx.

sorry..can't comment much..have to get back and collect more awards..ahahahaha

  • There's difference between 'Bread & Butter' accounts and 'Creative' accounts and sadly, we glamourous ad people have to cari makan also. Sometimes, we give adamant clients what they want. And believe you me, there are ads that came from the clients themselves. In order to save whatever dignity that's left of us advertising whores, we do scam ads lor.

(Scam ads: ads that's 'cleaned up'/altered/non-existent but can sapu a metal)

p/s: This is a purely personal opinion, so don't flame me please.
