SENIOR CITIZENS DAY

Wednesday, October 13, 2004
Yesterday Malaysia celebrated Senior Citizens Day. Senior Citizens (Warga Emas) were urged to be active and productive and among other things be a bridge between generations. Like they said, "Add life to years and not years to life". It would help if they have a life in the first place.
In 2002, it was estimated that 11.3% of the population or 3.2 million Malaysians were aged 60 or older. That is quite a market for dental adhesives, Preparation-H and other geriatric products.
Let us see how Malaysia cherish and value Senior Citizens.

Senior Citizens get discounts on MAS domestic flights but tickets must be bought 7 days before the flight. Do not think of bringing your classmates from Terengganu to Kuala Lumpur on the same flight or on the same day because seats for Senior Citizens are limited.
KTM also offers discount for Senior Citizens but I am not sure of the details. Someone enlighten me please.
The KLIA Express used to give Senior Citizens discount on the express trains to KLIA. Now, it seems, Senior Citizens can only get discounts on the "stop and go" trains. Beauty (of the balance sheet) before age?
Some government departments, like the Immigration Services do give preferences for Senior Citizens. I hope more establishments like banks will follow suit. We can't wait too long in our "Pampers" can we? Some banks offer various packages for Senior Citizens or, like Bank Rakyat's "Mengenang Budi" scheme for the benefit of one's parent.
Of course our LRT allocated seats for the aged, complete with signs. Pity some people can't read.
What other privileges do Senior Citizens get in Malaysia? I know government pensioners have some perks but what about the other pensioners or retirees? Ok, we have a nice song written about us by Dato' Ibrahim Bachik. What else? I know all of you readers are not Senior Citizens yet like me but I am sure you can suggest something so by the time you are 60, everything will be in place. Tell me if the objectives of the National Policy for The Elderly has been fully achieved.
I for one would like the Bomba to be around when they light up my next birthday cake. Too many candles now, too much of a fire hazard.

UPDATE: Here is the latest statistical projection about Senior Citizens in Malaysia.

  • Happy Senior Citizens Day, Pok Ku. Why are they calling old folks 'Warga Emas' when all we see a lot of silver?

  • what is age set as a benchmark so that one can be classified as 'warga emas'?

  • Happy Belated Senior Citizen's Day, Pok Ku.

At this juncture, I would just want to see the old folks' homes upgraded. Some of which I've seen are quite dire. Actually, I'd prefer if we remember to take care of our own parents so that there isnt a need to put them at old folks home at the first place. :)

  • Calling senior citizens as 'warga emas' is ONLY a slogan. In most cases,it does not exist in reality.I know personally when I travel with my 70 yrs old mother or when she goes to Hospital.

Ini macam kempen Cintailah Sungai Kita.Just look at the rivers-I know what to expect when my time comes(in 8 yrs from now if I live long enough).
So Pak Ku,Happy Senior Citizen Day and take care.

  • Public Bank has a counter for Senior Citizens and handicapped folks, and a notice at their number dispensing machine says numbers are not required for that counter. However, some of their staff apparently are not used to that yet because I witnessed one of their girls (PJ Atrium Branch) asking a senior citizen to 'take a number.' But there's hope yet...

  • Kri: If they had used "Warga Perak" it might just mean someone from Ipoh or Bota etc.
Anonymous: Right now, as per the UN, it is 60 years and above although perks I mentioned apply to Malaysians 55 and above too.
Leen: Please do not send your folks to homes other than yours.
Pak Adib: There is more to be done obviously.
d'arkampo : I need teaching myself but thanks for the thoughts.
fishtail: There is hope yet, I am sure.

  • I don't get some people at times. Saw an old man walking on a crowded Putra bus, all seats taken. I got up and offered my seat. Get a heck of a telling of as the man said he was still fit and didn't need my 'sympathy' though I was doing a good turn for him. Brain all addled from the encounter and face flushed red as everyone looked at me. The guy must have a ego of a 20 year old. Anyway bus services in Singapore is better off, the conductor when seeing a lady with child or senior citizen shouted out for someone to clear a seat, and many did, don't think i'll see our cconductors here doing the same, just drive on.

By Blogger Kervin, at 12:07 PM
  • No hope in hell! Our conductors here are known to have shouted at the old people to "Cepat sikit, cepat sikit!" and then "Masuk lagi, masuk lagi!"

  • When retire, I want to go back to Malaysia. The OAP's here in UK are treated like dirt.

  • Pokku:

I personally agree with Pak Adib. It is just a slogan. We have to admit that our country is full of slogans. We still have to work very hard to have 1st class citizens. Nowadays, we have lots of 1st class facility but 3rd class mentality. Like you said, there is still lots of room for improvement. Warga emas in Msia silap2 boleh jadi `warga lemas`... lemas melihat bagaimana generasi muda melayan mereka, bagaimana mereka dilayan of sektor korporat & kerajaan & tentu sekali lemas melihat telatah & kerenah sosial masyarakat majmuk Msia yg hanya zahirnya sahaja bersatu tetapi di belakang masing2 penuh dgn perasaan mencurigai antara kaum2.

  • With some people having betetr life-style and nutrition, it's hard to tell sometimes if someone is above 60.

And how do you treat an elderly lady (around 50s) who's still working? Should we give up seats for them? I'm not sure. Some people might take it wrongly, as if we are saying they are old.

I'm asking because I take the komuter everyday.
